One of the gladdest moments of human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of habit, the leaden weight of routine, the cloak of many cares and the slavery of home, man feels once more happy.
Sir Richard Burton

Urban Legends Shanghai & Music

May 2, 2010

Before 1985, no shop or restaurant in Shanghai was allowed to play music. When the authorities finally relaxed the ban, they were still eager to control what people were actually listening to. So, each venue was allowed to play only one, the approved tape, featuring panpipe classics, assorted muzak and Kenny G´s greatest hits. Although the one tape policy was abolished in 1995, the tradition remained, stuck - so many places still play the same music today. Over and over again. Just spare a thought for the poor sous having to work there every day.
