One of the gladdest moments of human life, methinks, is the departure upon a distant journey into unknown lands. Shaking off with one mighty effort the fetters of habit, the leaden weight of routine, the cloak of many cares and the slavery of home, man feels once more happy.
Sir Richard Burton

First leg - final draft

September 21, 2006

The first leg is now planned out. For a short overview, just read through the list below. For additional, more detailed information, please click on “(more…)”

Bregenz – austrian/german border – Lindau – Munich – Passau – german/austrian border - Vienna – Hainburg – austrian/slovakian border – Bratislava – slovakian/hungarian border – Györ – Komàron – hungarian/slovakian border – Komarno - slovakian/hungarian border – Tata – Esztergom – Visegrad – Szentendre – Budapest – Gyöngyös – Damoszlo – Verpélet – Eger – Mezökovesd – Tiszafüred – Hortobagy Nationalpark – Püspökladony – Bihar – Keresztes – hungarian/romanian border – Oradea (Großwardein) – Cluj Napoca (Klausenburg) – Turda (Thorenburg (sic!)) – Alba Julia – Sebes – Sibiu (Hermannstadt) –

Now I have two options planned out, the decision which one I´ll take will be taken the day of my arrival.

Option1: Fögoras – Brasov – Sinaia – Targovista -
Option 2: Carta – Curtea se Arges – Pitesti -

Bucuresti – Constanta – Mangalia – Varna – Veche – romanian / bulgarian border – Durankulak – Schabla – Kamen Brjag – Baltschik – Varna – Kamtschiga – Bjala – Burgas – Djuni – Primorska – Malko Tarnovo – bulgarian / turkish border – Dereköy – Sarpdere – Demirköy - Istanbul

From Bregenz I’ll take the train until Vienna (with a short shopping break in Munich, I still need to buy some gears) to get started. After a short stay in Vienna (visiting different embassies, oh how funny and amusing this will be…) I’ll finally start riding my bike. Following the river Danube, I’ll pass through Orth an der Donau and Hainburg before I’m leaving Austria to enter Slovakia to visit Bratislava, the capital. From there, I’ll follow the riverbank, switching to Hungary to Slovakia and back visiting Györ, Komàron, Komarno and Tata definitely leaving Slovakia for this trip.
The next about 60 km are said to be one of the most beautiful parts of Hungary. Visiting Esztergom, Visegrad and Szentendre I reach Budapest – where I’ll spend at least a whole day to visit the city for the first time since more than 15 years and take some rest.
After the little rest, it’s time to make some kilometres. Riding through Gyöngyös, Damoszlo, Verpélet, Eger, Mezökovesd and Tiszafüred I’ll reach Hortobagy National park, the next place to spend some time. I’ll unhurriedly cross the national park, taking my time for some pictures.
Riding further to Püspökladony, Bihar and Keresztes I’ll leave Hungary, entering romanian soil at Oradea (Großwardein)

More to come….

coucou Clemens!
j’attends de tes nouvelles avec impatience;
tu me manques, Véronique

Che Voradelberger!Suggestion for your onward journey: There’s a big country far far away. The plains seem endless and will dwarf your first puszta experiences. Winds aren’t unknown to these lands either and not all of these “aires” are “buenos”. Nevertheless you shall find there your fair share of treasures in form of mouthwatering steaks, served not exclusively with water.
…and get that extra insurance if you want to enter the city. Suerte, chabon!!!
